Summary: Silicon photonics has received strong attention because of high bandwidth, low power and cost capability to address significantly increased communication traffic and functionality requirements in networking and communication applications. Integrating photonics into electronics as a monolithic solution has been considered as a promising path to take advantage of the well-established electronic application eco-system. GlobalFoundries provides a foundry solution in monolithic silicon photonics. A significant amount of reliability and failure mode investigation has been done in multiple technology qualifications, including both electronic and photonic device reliability. The Telcordia standard is available, but it does not provide a perfect fit in the foundry scope. In electronics, especially for advanced CMOS technologies, the reliability characterization and models have been well developed with a good eco-system for product designs. In comparison, the reliability eco-system of silicon photonics applications is lagging although there has been a significant improvement in recent times. In this talk, a comprehensive view of the reliability outlook and challenges in monolithic silicon photonics technology approaches is presented.
Dr. Byoung Woon Min (IEEE Senior Member since 2003) received B.S. from Korea University in 1988, M.S. from Korea Advanced Institute of Science Technology in 1990 and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998. He has been in advanced semiconductor devices technology development and reliability characterization, working with SK Hynix in 1988-1994, Motorola/Freescale/NXP in 1997-2017, and currently with GlobalFoundries as Deputy Director of reliability engineering group since 2017. His works covers from advanced CMOS to various features like silicon photonics, SiGe bipolar, RF, memory and GaN technologies. He authored/co-authored over 30 technical papers and invented/co-invented over 30 patents in various generations and applications of CMOS technology and is currently serving as an editor of IEEE Trans. on Device and Materials Reliability and a reliability committee member for International Electron Device Meeting 2021-2022.
