This year's robotics challenge is to help address the estimated 8 million tons of plastic entering our oceans every year. Your solution may help address this environmental challenge.

The 2022 IEEE Region 5 Annual Business Meeting was held at the Hilton Houston North. The competition was an in-person Underwater Robotics Competition to collect ‘trash’ from the ocean floor, midwater, and surface.

There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste estimated to be in our oceans. 269,000 tons float, and 4 billion microfibers per km² dwell below the surface.

70% of our debris sinks into the ocean's ecosystem, 15% floats, and 15% lands on our beaches. The goal of the competition was to collaborate, challenge, and lead.
